New format aside (I thought there was more value in more fun categories rather than talking about every single game), I think overall this year was better than last year. The only rough patches were Abby's little melty on day 1, and Brad/Alex being completely unable to comprehend how a game can be good, yet not meet expectations.

I'm just glad RDR didn't win, because that game really was PAINFUL to play. I equate RDR2 to MGS3 in the 'excellent core game with a great story ruined by bullshit game mechanics" category

So something happened, and it being a stronger Snake is unlikely. So it's a Sonic drop or a very large amount of random variance.

Again though, a Sonic drop just brings up further questions that need to be answered, such as:

- If Sonic dropped, why did Knuckles boost?
- DItto for Tails
- If those other Sonic matches are legit, and Sonic dropped like a rock, how do you explain his performance on Auron, and by proxy, Vincent? That entire division just looks like absolute shit if this was a random, unexplained Sonic drop.

I'm a firm believer in Occam's Razor, and the way to explain these results with the least amount of assumptions is by writing off those results because of Smash SFF, and pegging Sonic closer to 47-48% on Snake, and giving Snake a couple percentage points against Samus

This match is great. Majora and FFX is like baby FF7/OOT, which is depressing in its own way but hey that's gamefaqs for ya. We just move down the line to the baby versions when our big dogs aren't there.

Majora put up a similar number on MGS3 that FFX did on RE4, and MGS3/RE4 were pretty much identical in the previous contest, so it makes sense that this was super close. We were eyeing this match ever since Majora pounded Wind Waker and it lived up to the hype. FF7 can't hang with OOT but these two were perfect for each other. It's like CT/LTTP - just a great match between two strong games (by 2000s standards, anyway).

But there's one other thing here. In my opinion, this is the last classic gamefaqs match. By that I mean, it had a high number of votes, it had clearly established trends, it had a 1500ish vote lead comeback, there was an afterschool vote, etc. It had classic FF vs. Zelda trends too. Majora went up early, FFX put up what felt like an untouchable lead and Majora made an incredible comeback in the day. FFX even cut 200 votes in the last 2 hours just like the Knuckles and Maguses of the world used to. It had everything that those old classic matches had.

You stopped getting that after this. (you might have had it in the rivalry rumble, I forget. those matches don't count anyway.) After this, our vote totals dropped by two thirds, and then three fourths, and we started having to come up with artificial ways to keep our vote totals looking okay like double votes for registered users. 2018 was a strong contest with a great bracket but there's no movement and little interest. A contest was going on and you barely even noticed any new people show up on the board. It was a match amongst people aged 25-35 and the results showed with no new characters being good. Except 2B. That's so weird.

Anyway, I say this not to dump on more recent contests as I really did enjoy the 2018 version. It was a great return to form after all the dumb fourways and threeways and gimmick contests. But FFX/Majora is a match that should be celebrated as the last of its kind. It's too bad FFX didn't win for some kind of supposed balance between the good and bad sides of the force, but I kinda like the Majora result more in 2018 than I did in 2010.

I'm willing to forgive a lot in sci-fi, as long as the creators stick to their own damn rules. Star Wars since the great EU purge has completely abandoned any semblance of continuity, which retroactively ruins the original movies.

If you could just hyperspace jump through a forcefield and pull up 1000 ft from the surface of Star Killer, why couldn't the rebels have just jumped through the shield around DSII in Jedi? Would have saved a lot of lives and they wouldn't have needed the ground strike on the forest moon.

How about the cannons when they're chasing the fleet that have a firing arc? How about the complete trashing of hyperspace mechanics to serve a plot point?

I usually don't care for the nitpicky details, but these changes completely ruin a lot of the plot in the original movies. If all you needed to do to destroy a giant superweapon was to fly into it a lightspeed, they could have just pointed a Corellian corvette at the heart of the Death Star and turned on hyperdrive. Or just invent missiles that have a hyperdrive engine to instantly puncture any shield and destroy a capital ship

Nothing about Leia's scenes had anything to do with feminism, it was more the ridiculous (and unintentionally hilarious) visual of the scene, coupled with the fact that it added absolutely nothing to the story.

The militant feminist issue is more surrounding admiral bitch-face, who despite having poor leadership qualities and decision making skills, is made to be some kind of 'badass' because she has blue hair. Take out Holdo and put in Admiral Ackbar in that role and the story becomes 1000x more compelling. Skip the 'Leia in space' scene or have her surrender her self to confront Kylo (and then be rescued by Finn to give him something to do besides that casino bullshit.

Look, in 5 minutes of thinking, I have already made the movie a million times better

The things that TLJ did right were the risks it took. Everything about Kylo and Rey's story was handled well, and I personally had no issue with how Luke was handled.

The issue were the parts that didn't take risks at all. The shoehorned in Chinese lady was a very flagrant attempt to boost ticket sales in the growing chinese market, and admiral bitch-face was there to pander to the SJW morons that enjoyed Ghostbusters 2016. The side-plot on the casino planet was supposed to appeal to kids I guess? I really don't understand Finn's entire story in the movie, the only conclusion I can come to is that I'm too old now to understand it?

Then again, they already did that with the "let's just jump in THROUGH the planetary shield" bullshit in TFA, so I guess the science in science fiction is dead.

Maybe, but the way it was filmed and executed (if you can ignore the science fiction) is in my opinion one of the most breathtaking moments in movies.

It was a very pretty CGI effect and the sound design was great, but to call it one of the 'most breathtaking moments in movies' is completely insane. If that is your honest opinion, you clearly have not watched nearly enough movies
